While casually browsing sub-€3000 cars for sale , to find a ride more suitable to the Europpomeet than the Twingo, I came across this Fiat 131
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
It can’t be that bad, can it? Although I strongly doubt it will be any faster than the Twingo...

A selection of things that you should want:
![]() 02/13/2019 at 01:54 |

Don’t park it in a garage if it’s attached to the house. And I believe it’s carbureted, so you’ll need about 4 or 5 rebuild kits. And Veglia gauges and Italian electrics? What could possibly go wrong?

Get the DAF.
![]() 02/13/2019 at 01:56 |

pretty sure its slower than the twingo tbh
easier to work on tho... and apk till 2020 means its still solid (or the garage was corrupt)
i think its a great idea

And some more:

And one more set for my amusement :

That Renault 5 and Escort look noice! No clue how good or bad they are...
![]() 02/13/2019 at 02:20 |

I have no idea either, just picking things that look interesting to me, and trying to make sure they run (I figure a big project is more than is desired). Passed on some non-running Porsches that would have been nice.

The 404 and R5 are definitely interesting!
![]() 02/13/2019 at 02:48 |

Yeah, that’s exactly my intention. I’m okay with fixing small stuff, but a complete restoration or rust repair is a bit too far fetched
![]() 02/13/2019 at 02:49 |
|
I’ve seen the add for the Volvo, that one is very tempting! The Daf is fun too, but a bit slow
The 205 is intri guing too! I wonder what 205-guru Duurtlang thinks of that one
![]() 02/13/2019 at 02:50 |

There is also a 66 within budget:
Though I doubt if it is any faster...

.....triggered? (in a good way I see).
![]() 02/13/2019 at 02:58 |

Why does it need to be fast???
I feel like if you get a DAF, it should be air-cooled. Like a Porsche. Exotic.
![]() 02/13/2019 at 03:13 |
|
I’ve been seeing the ad for that SD1 for quite some time. My guess is that it can’t be registered in the Netherlands due to the rust (it’s on Belgian plates now)
That Samba though!
![]() 02/13/2019 at 03:20 |
|
Doesn’t have to be super fast, but it should at least be able to sort of keep up with the rest of the Europpos (BRZ, Z4, NC MX5, ND MX5, Turboswapped 205 CTi, among others) I’ll be happy if I can match the pace of the Twingo and Clio in the group though
![]() 02/13/2019 at 03:25 |

Going by that it should be more than capable enough for me!;)
![]() 02/13/2019 at 06:03 |
|
Me being me, I need to second the 131, that FIAT 600, the Panda or the Renault 4. :D
As long as there isn’t any rust on the 131, it would be a pretty good car I think!
![]() 02/13/2019 at 06:05 |

That SEAT would be cool! 127-based, and uncommon!
Also, that Hyundai would be amusing for shits and giggles! :P

Seconded!

An 1800 engine... in 1976? Bar the Abarth Rally, which is a completely different animal (IRS instead of live axle - and that’s just to begin with), t he top of the range a t the time was a t w i n-cam 1600 , probably with a five-speeder. (And I am not even sure the five-speed gearbox was available in 1976).
131s are supposed to have tidy handling, and if that twin-cam is in good condition, it won’t be slow. Don’t expect wonderful brakes... although I understand a f e w first-series 131s had discs at the rear too.
Just checked Wikipedia: maybe it is US version converted with Euro bumpers? Those had a single-cam 1.8 and an auto.

Yeah, the engine size confused me too (that is after I consulted Wikipedia)
The license plate is not an original 70s one , but it comes back as a 1.3. That makes it even more confusing. Surely a 1.3 wouldn’t have had a 5 speed right?
My guess is a US 1.8 engine, with a 5 speed from a 1.6 ?
![]() 02/13/2019 at 08:05 |

Correction: at launch, the 1.6 engine was decidedly single-cam (and not even OHC). Twin cam engines came later.

So an DOHC 1.8? That would mean a US series 2 engine then
It does stand out this way, but a metallic colour would be better. As would Cromodoro or campagnolo wheels

I can tell you it is an old Lampredi DOHC engine, but I don’t know enough to t e l l how big it is. They came in 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 displacements and o v e r t h e y e a r s w e r e used in a lot of Fiat Auto cars. The engine itself may have come from a FWD Fiat or Lancia, or an old Seat.
Maybe you should ask the seller about the engine number?

Good to know it is in fact a Lampredi DOHC. Maybe the outward similarity allowed it to be registered as a 1.3 (for ease of registration/not having to do an individual approval for a larger engine)
Yes, the ad says it is equipped with a ‘5 bak’, Dutch motorist slang for 5 speed

I noticed that too, definitely the twin cam and not the 1300 OHV that would have been stock according to the badges . You would think they would have mentioned more but maybe it’s been in there longer than the original.

I wonder whether it’s an original colour, I had never ever seen one 131 like that.
If I were you I’d look for some decent steelies (13" or even 14" from a third-gen or whatever) and spend some money instead in Uno Turbo brakes at the front (or bigger if you fit 14 " w h e e l s ). Maybe that entails changing the master cylinder ? N o idea.

The twin cam 1.8L was found in the 124 Coupes and Spider so it could be one of those. Seems a more likely to find a euro 124 than shipping a 1.8 from the states.
There should be a casting number on top that would tell you what it came from if you do go check it out. Well, the head at least.

That Samba though!
Exactly! Same dual carb engine as the early 205 XS (and the 86-88 205 CT convertible) ! As expected, this has my vote.

I like it! For that price too. That engine is awesome sounding, characterful and unusual. Certainly not slow either.
If it doesn’t have a lot of rust (205s are among the most rust-resistant cars of 1987, but 1987 is 32 years ago...) it should be a good buy. It is at a professional place and it does not have APK. This is a bit of a red flag...
